Fstyling stars like Faith Evans and Camilla Cabello and creating looks for popular TV shows like Drug on Hulu to work on photo shoots as Halsey for Paper Magazine and major ad campaigns for some of the world’s biggest companies, Detroit native Ebony Brown has established herself as a jack of all trades in the fashion industry. .
The stylist, who now lives in Los Angeles, knows how to create looks for any occasion and is always on the pulse of what’s next in fashion. Here, Brown talks spring fashion and how to update your wardrobe for the warmer weather ahead.
Hour Detroit: What trends are you watching this spring?
Ebony Brown: Y2K fashion is back with baby t-shirts, which look great with baggy or boxy pants. The little strip of skin between the shirt and the top of the pants is such a simple thing yet adds a sexy edge to an outfit without showing too much skin.
Denim is something so classic and so constantly in style. I love the boyfriend silhouette of jeans, something that is a bit more relaxed and not as stiff as skinny jeans. I’m also a big fan of cutouts in denim, especially for spring and summer, and I’m very interested in elevating the placement of distresses in jeans.
What about color trends? Do you have any tips for incorporating more color into your wardrobe?
Lime green will be the number 1 of the season. Beyoncé had just been to the Oscars in a lime green moment, so that’s a stamp of approval. Muted greens, different shades of yellow, those colors scream spring and will be fun to play with.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of the color. I usually stick with black, white, gray and beige. But when I want to add a flashy touch, I start with a tank top and pair it with black hoodies and a cute sandal or heel. You can make colorful accessories. Hoop earrings with an enamel finish in red, lime green, even royal blue will add a little more fun to the outfit. If you want to make a colorful shoe, I always recommend starting with a lower price, especially if you’re buying a color that’s on trend. You don’t need to break the bank for something you won’t use every day.
What are your favorite accessories for spring?
Accessories can really make or break your look. You can be in sweats, a tank top, and cute sneakers, but by adding three or four layered necklaces, that can be a really cute moment. I would say that the biggest accessory as we move into spring is pearls. They are not your grandmother’s pearls, they can be cute earrings with small pearl details, pearl rings. It is very fashionable now.
With spring weather so unpredictable in Detroit, what advice do you have for using some winter pieces in your spring wardrobe?
I know everyone still wears sweatpants. We try to say that the days of sweatpants are over, but it’s not. Instead of stopping, we can lift them up. Put on some nicer sweatpants, not the ones you wear around the house, and pair them with a jacket. They come in big plaid and are a bit longer and thicker than a regular plain plaid shirt, and when paired together they can make for a great transition moment. Adding a tank top underneath is great because a lot of times in Michigan the day will start at 50 degrees and in the afternoon it will be 70.
What is your advice for dressing in a professional environment this spring? And how do you recommend going from an office-appropriate day look to an evening look?
The professional wardrobe has definitely changed post-quarantine, many companies no longer require a “business casual” look, but you still need to look professional. If your company allows jeans, I suggest a darker wash and pairing them with a cool boot or sandal, tank top, and blazer. Oversized blazers are a massive trend right now, so you can take advantage of that. If you have to dress in a more professional way, menswear is always a good option.
Men’s fashion for women has been around and it’s a style that will never go away. Trouser-style pants with an oversized blazer and a small t-shirt or tank top underneath will make you look extremely put together but also keep you comfortable. This type of outfit is also very easy to turn into a cool night out look. You have your pants and jacket on; you can swap out the work-appropriate top for something like a bandeau or tank top. You still look fancy, but now it’s fun.
How would you combine an outfit to go out in spring?
It is a good time to experiment with dresses. Pants are definitely a comfort zone, but a maxi dress or maxi skirt is a great way to dress up and feel comfortable. You can pair a maxi skirt with a bandeau or bra to show more skin, or you can pair it with a bodysuit that is really flattering on anyone. If you’re looking to take things one step further, you can embrace the Y2K fashion movement we’re seeing right now and try a mini skirt. Mini skirts with a cute t-shirt and chunky sneakers create a simple look that’s still very much on trend.
