Doug Sprankle: Games of skill mean health insurance for my employees | Business Insurance

know about this Doug Sprankle: Games of skill mean health insurance for my employees

in complete details.

I could recount hundreds of stories I’ve heard about how businesses, along with frat clubs and veterans’ organizations, have benefited greatly from legal skill sets.

Instead, I’ll just tell my story. Sprankle’s Neighborhood Markets is a small family business run by my father, brother and myself with three stores in Armstrong and Butler counties. In 2018, we decided to try something new in our stores, hoping it would be fun for customers and generate revenue. We install skill games.

Last year, for the first time, we were able to provide health benefits to our employees and free lunches for them, all through our revenue from skill games. This has allowed us to maintain a great staff. While companies around us have desperately posted “help wanted” signs, we have to turn away people who want to work for us.

Telling our employees that they could get health insurance through our business was a big day for my family and had a big impact on the workers.

Chances are you know of a company, firehouse, frat club, or veterans organization that has skill games and benefits from them. Some would have closed their doors forever due to covid and the current economic climate were it not for the skill game revenue.

Funds for games of skill also reach our communities. Businesses and organizations can help local charities that help our neighbors, our firefighters, and other important entities. We do an annual fundraiser for the Salvation Army and the money from the skill game helps us reach our goal. Due to the pandemic, Pennsylvania Skill, powered by Pace-O-Matic, gave $750,000 to food banks across the state and hosted free dinners in communities hardest hit by COVID-19.

I am frustrated by those who claim that my games of skill are taking away revenue from casinos, when the closest one is almost an hour from my shop.

I highly doubt someone planning a night out at a casino would decide to stop at a Moose Lodge to play games of skill instead. They are completely different experiences for customers. On the one hand, the game is based on technology that guarantees that the house wins, a lot. Games of skill can always be won with skill and patience.

Pennsylvania Skill Games, as well as Skill Games in various states, are manufactured in Williamsport and employ hundreds of Pennsylvanians. Game pieces are manufactured by companies across the state. The games mean millions of dollars in taxes. In fact, the skill game industry wants to pay more taxes and supports legislation introduced in the General Assembly that would further regulate skill games, using increased gaming taxes for state coffers.

We have also seen an increase in our lottery sales since we installed games of skill, which helps state programs that support seniors. I know other places in Pennsylvania have said the same thing. We all know this for a fact because we regularly report our lottery sales to the state and have seen the momentum.

There are many great skills game stories around the state, and every one of my employees who now has health benefits from us can tell one.
