Paul Aarrington started out as an intern at RCA Records with aspirations to work in the music business. Shortly after, he became dissatisfied and decided to start his own fashion line, PAUL AARRINGTON, INC..
The company was established in 1996 and its designs began to appear in many retail stores, including Macy’s. Her career in fashion took off through fashion shows and working with other top designers. Aarrington was able to work with people like AMBIENT Y WEATHER magazines. His clothing also gave way to the style of various radio personalities and television hosts.
Aarrington recently set up a small manufacturing, printing and media company to expand their brand and take their business to the next level. BLACK COMPANY spoke with the entrepreneur to talk about his beginnings and how he anticipates his business will change in the future.
You’ve been running your own namesake clothing company, PAUL AARRINGTON, INC., for over 25 years. what inspired you to become an entrepreneur, and what keeps you going?
My motivation for becoming an entrepreneur was my love of creativity and seeing ideas come to life. He knew how to style and match the clothes to wear, but he knew nothing about how to design them. While talking to a co-worker at a job I used to work at, he made fun of my name; Paul Aarrington menswear, with a hint of sarcasm. I said that sounds good, and I set out to learn about fashion design, surrounded myself with the right people and everything related to fashion. I know it sounds cliché, but I have an overwhelming drive to create and innovate new things.
My creativity lies within music. House music, disco and rap are my influences. Each genre gives a different vibe and makes me feel and create in different ways. I used to be a DJ and produce music a few years ago. When I walk into a store looking at other clothes, the pieces translate into music for me. I can see the pieces that are used in an event with a specific type of music. Since I am a huge Todd Terry fanatic, I find myself designing with his music in the background. Some days, disco music takes me back to a period of time that motivates me to look back at that time for ideas and inspiration.
He has expanded his fashion brand to include footwear, colognes and baseball caps, adding another item to his portfolio. Audio and video services are now her forte. What inspired you to include those services, and what else are you doing to incorporate your apparel company?
As times have changed, so have my brand offerings. My motto has always been that no matter how you scale the brand, that component must also be able to stand on its own, earn money for the whole picture, and not just face value. I have added a video and audio studio to create all of our videos and web ads in-house, along with music needs for ads and/or commercials. I am fully equipped for the production and post-production of each and every one of the multimedia content that the brand requires. The expanded part of the brand is AVR STUDIOS and PIII Media, inspired by my son Paul Aarrington III. I produced our first sneaker web commercial for the brand with our own production. I have a screen printing shop, Nexus Print Studio, which houses our own printing equipment, embroidery machines and 12 industrial sewing machines. These give us the ability to design, produce and modify many things while offering the printing service to other companies. I really like ownership, so I own all the equipment in our facility. We also do internal photography, so in my opinion there are no limits. Ultimately, I would like to produce films that incorporate our own products into these works.
How do you wear so many hats and still put out products like single window and creative?
Even though I have so many things to do, I find time to be creative and never turn off that mode. I bounce ideas from my wife Yuvelca to get your perspective. I also consult with other people on a team aspect, so to speak, getting suggestions on how to make things come together. But for the most part, I live the creative process all day, every day. It all boils down to having a system that I know I can connect the components to and move on to the next idea.
In your opinion, what is the most essential characteristic and/or quality that entrepreneurs need to be successful?
Important traits to become a successful entrepreneur are self-confidence, determination, drive, and a love for what you do. We know that believing in yourself is essential. There are many people who will tell you what you can’t do because they believe that for themselves and think it must be true for you as well. Let those unbelievers become the fuel to move forward. There will undoubtedly be obstacles that will distract and discourage you. These are just lessons to get you to the next level. A labor of love will always take you beyond the mere pursuit of money. The money will come if you love and follow your dream.
With so many tools at his disposal, what should we expect to see from PAUL AARINGTON in the future? Is there a particular project that we should know about?
Having acquired many resources, I see my brand fully expanding in many areas, including licensed products (housewares, bath and body items, spas, etc.). My dream at this point is to make the brand a culture, not just a name you recognize, but something you want to be a part of, something you live and breathe. Since music is a big part of my life and creative process, I can also see a music division.
As for the projects I am working on, my approach remains innovative. clothing. But to give you a sneak peek of what I’m up to, I’m working on a fun yet educational show for my son, which will also show him in some of his namesake clothes.
