From food to toys, the computer genius launches a new pet store (6 photos)

‘Customers who show us photos of their horses, dogs or cats. It’s the lovely part of retail, meeting people,” says the owner of Tack n Bark.

Tack n Bark, a new store that caters to all things horse and dog, opened this year and hopes to take a bite out of the city’s pet supply market.

Located at 28 Currie St., Unit 14, near St. Vincent and Rose streets, Tack n Bark opened its doors in January and provides customers with quality feed and many other accessories for horses and pets.

Owner Kajen Selva had created an online ordering platform six years ago and has now expanded into a physical store.

“My background in technology allowed me to create the database and the online platform. We bring a lot of innovation in e-commerce as well as compliance setup,” says Selva barriehoy.

As most business-minded people realize, it takes more than a pretty setup to be successful.

“We wanted to make sure that we weren’t going to be just another big pet store, so by building a brand and bringing in quality products, we really worked on our research and made sure that the brands and food that we brought in was of the highest quality,” he says. “We really believe in all ingredients and we wanted to make sure that all ingredients were traceable and top quality.”

Those products include Toronto’s Open Farm, Saskatchewan’s Horizon and Frumm, a company that invented dry dog food in 1904 and is still family-owned.

Getting started in this business came naturally for Selva, who rides horses in her spare time.

“I ride dressage, it’s one of my hobbies, and so a friend of mine asked me to do some research that has to do with the equestrian industry, so I formulated Stable Masters Choice Vitamin E, which is a natural vitamin E for horses. . We sell them here and ship them all over the world,” he says.

“I needed a website because people kept calling and asking where they could buy it. After I did that, people started asking me if they could carry more products, so it was because of that demand, asking for more products for horses. Most horse owners also have dogs, so it’s called Tack and Bark,” adds Selva.

He admits that building a business like this can be a daunting task.

“It’s a lot of work, but people are happy and we have lovely customers. We don’t really spend money on marketing because we really stand behind our products and everyone who walks through our door is marketing for us with referrals,” says Selva.

The behind-the-scenes effort is just as demanding and also keeps you busy. He does all the coding for the website himself.

“I am very practical. I really didn’t have anyone to help me,” says Selva. “I did all the cabling for the cameras and the network; that’s my experience in the technology industry that allowed me to do all of that, which I also continue to do. I did have some help painting the place though.”

When asked what his favorite part of this new company is so far, he simply replied “the people.”

“It is very different from what I did before. I build technologies, but I think just meeting people and seeing how happy they are, and their puppies too. Clients who show us photos of their horses, dogs or cats. It’s the lovely part of retail, meeting people,” he says.

Being as busy as Selva is, he is not willing to take any breaks and is already thinking of expanding.

“We are already starting to think about opening another location in Courtice, and I hope to make this a national brand. If I can get this all over Canada, that would be awesome,” she says.

And the online half of the business is also expanding.

“We are preparing to launch our new website in a few weeks and will make other products available for small animals, farm animals, reptiles and more,” says Selva.

“We already have products for cats, since we couldn’t leave them,” he says with a laugh. “We carry cat food, both wet and dry, as well as cat toys, litter boxes and other cat-related items.”
