Kanye West is paying $200,000 a month in child support. Where did that number come from? | Kanye West

hHow much does it cost to raise a Kardashian-West child? $200,000 a month, according to a settlement reached Tuesday in Los Angeles superior court. Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, ended a months-long legal drama by agreeing to pay that amount in child support to his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. But where did the figure come from?

Parents are usually awarded child support based on formulas or calculators established by state governments. These formulas take into account the finances of both parents. In California, the average amount is about $430 per child each month.

The goal is to ensure that children affected by divorce can continue with the lives they’re used to, says Jacqueline Newman, managing partner at New York divorce law firm Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein, LLP. “Conceptually speaking, in the settlements, you don’t want a rich dad and a poor dad,” she explained. “A deal should even things out.”

Given the family’s wealth, that’s not a concern. “The high-income cases end up being a lifestyle analysis,” Newman said. Parents submit documentation of their children’s costly experiences (private planes, bodyguards) and those sums end up reporting the final amount of child support.

Kardashian’s attorney, Laura Wasser, and Ye’s attorney, Nicholas A Salick, did not respond to requests for comment, but court documents filed in Los Angeles found that their four children, all under the age of 10, require the amount to cover your private security, private school and eventual university costs.

“Certainly, Kanye West’s children are going to be different from my children and their children in terms of their background and what they do on a daily basis,” said Val Kleyman, a founding member of the New York law firm Kleyman. “Divorce cannot be the reason why these children do not travel or live in a certain way that they are used to.”

And these kids (North, nine, Saint, six, Chicago, four, and Psalm, three) certainly live in their own unique and privileged way. They all attend Sierra Canyon School, a private day school in Los Angeles where tuition it operates $20,000 a year for pre-kindergarten students and $40,770 for high school students. the north has assisted fashion weeks with her mother since she was a child, frequently flying private jets from New York to Paris and Milan.

All these extracurricular activities, luxurious as they are, are included in the agreement, to ensure that the children’s day-to-day is not interrupted by any separation. “These kids are traveling on private planes and staying in hotels that are expensive for what they are, because of the need for safety from the paparazzi,” Kleyman said. “These extracurricular activities are what a judge looks at to determine how much is needed to maintain that lifestyle.”

Ye joins a list of celebrity parents facing large child support payments after costly splits. In 2010, the late Las Vegas businessman and resort mogul Kirk Kerkorian was tidy to pay $10 million plus $100,000 a month, even after his ex-wife admitted the girl was not his biological daughter. More recently, Nick Cannon, a father of 11 children, said he paid “much more” $3 million a year in child support.

There is also the matter of Ye’s rapidly deteriorating wealth. Gap, Balenciaga and Adidas all dropped the rapper, who launched anti-Semitic rants and is associate with white supremacistscausing him to supposedly lose $2 billion in one day. Legal experts who spoke to The Guardian say Ye could apply for a modification in the future if he shows that his finances have changed enough.

Even if that happens, it’s unlikely to affect the day-to-day existence of the Kardashian-West kids. As Kleyman put it: “Whether or not Kim needs $200,000 from Kanye when she has her own money is a different question.”
