Petco Love celebrates a year of doing the Reunite for Pets thing; Issues Industry Challenge Ahead of National Stray Dogs & Cats Day

Estimates suggest that one in three pets go missing in their lifetime, that’s staggering 10 million annually — and many never return home. This heartbreaking number is why Petco Love created the national database, which simplifies and shortens the search for lost pets using just a photo of a pet. Facial recognition technology enables Petco’s national Love Lost database, populated by more than 1,800 shelter locations, to identify and bring home these lost pets.

Bringing together missing pets is an industry-wide challenge, one that often requires an entire community to assist in the search effort. Petco Love’s mission is to unite pet owners, animal welfare organizations, veterinary clinics and other industry partners to make reuniting with a lost pet a simpler process.

Last week, at one of the animal welfare industry’s largest conferences, leading national nonprofit Petco Love launched an industry challenge for animal shelters to meet more than 50% of animal intake stray animals by 2024. Current estimates suggest that less than 32%** of lost pets entering shelters will return home nationally.

“It’s tragic for both the animal and their family when a pet goes missing,” Petco Love’s president said. Susana Kogut. “And Petco Love understands that when the unthinkable happens, families need help, fast.” He adds: “In the animal welfare shelter industry over the last 10 years, there has been little improvement in the number of lost pets at shelters being reunited with their families, and that is unacceptable. We can simplify the search by working together on a single platform that connects shelters, pet owners and neighbors. like fallonThey are family and deserve our best efforts to bring them back home. We believe that together we can do better.”
