Fashion designer Punit Balana is a name to be reckoned with, especially when it comes to succeeding today designs with loads of glamour. In more than two decades, she has not only dressed the who’s who of Bollywood and the fashion industry, but has also exhibited in many shows include the FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week 2022.

“Whenever I see someone in a Punit Balana outfit, whether it’s a celebrity or a client, I take that as the ultimate compliment, even if I don’t say it,” she says.

In an email interaction with indianexpress.comtalks about the allure of physical shows versus digital shows, key points of the pandemic, his new collection, and more. Edited excerpts below:

I am inspired by the rich heritage of craftsmanship from the land I grew up in: Rajasthan, and the colors of nature and everything natural. At the same time, the love of our customers keeps me motivated to keep creating, to keep thinking about what’s next.

Tell us about your latest collection.

my last collection, Lakshmi, is a canvas painted with bold lotuses, birds, enchanted gardens, Mughal-era horses, hand printed on the surface of the garment, like an artist’s fantasy come true! Exploratory Layered Metallic embroidery in prints and solid tones, the creative use of antique coins, thread and mirrors breathe magic into the rich palates of neutrals, henna tones and earth tones. The collection is filled with our signature well-fitting pocket skirts, corsets and capes; short cucutsand deep shoulders Short blouses paired up, printed sareemetal bralettesprinted shararas and peplum jackets even transparent lingerie dresses.

This was my first time working with bold motifs in natural vegetable dyes with kalamkari and ajrak on exquisite chanderi silks providing a vision that brought Rajasthani heritage to life like never before. Each set has a characteristic element of Punit Balana but a completely new structure and style. This was also our first runway show for our menswear after we launched Balana Men in 2020.

How would you describe your experience with the pandemic?

The pandemic affected many local businesses, and we’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect us. But it also gave us plenty of time to go back to the drawing board and brainstorm. We research and study consumers and what they love about our brand, and I would proudly say that the pandemic was when we launched our Balana Man label, which is a continuation of our temporize lyrics Rajasthan arts and crafts

A day in the life of Punit Balana includes…

My day starts with a visit to my Jaipur atelier, where I brainstorm new ideas, work on new prints and meet my karigares followed by a visit to the store for personal appointments. This usually takes up half of my day and then I go to the gym at night or go to my aerobics class. Afternoons and nights are reserved for family dinners with my wife and my son or going out with friends.

How did it feel to be back on a physical ramp after more than two years?

Showing at FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week was very integral to the Punit Balana label and very special to my journey in Fashion. Being back is a sign of relief and excitement as always. digital shows they lack the touch-feel element and the experience of a physical show which is still unbeatable.

What has been the biggest compliment you have received so far?

Anytime I see someone in Punit Balana’s outfit, whether it’s a celebrity or a client, I take it as the ultimate compliment, even if it doesn’t say it.

Is sustainability in fashion possible?

sustainable fashion it just became a buzzword. A label can be sustainable in many ways and it is a long journey for a brand to call itself fully sustainable. We at this label are taking small steps and one day we will achieve the goal as we are all a work in progress. We are gradually moving towards adopting sustainable processes in everything we do to reduce waste, integrate more crafts and give back to our artisans and integrate more craft processes into our work to keep it relevant to today’s audience.

Your opinion on the comfort of dressing?

I think the term morphed a lot during the pandemic when everything ground to a halt and work moved into hybrid formats. comfort bandage It’s important in any setting today because your clothes define your mood and a lot of who you are today, so if you’re not comfortable it will be seen one way or another. I would say that the rules of fashion when it comes to formal settings have already been redefined with a high level of athleisure, matching outfits, prints dress pants etc.

Who do you want to design for?

Design for all, who appreciate our craftsmanship and techniques that help maintain our inheritance intact. Because if we don’t have our roots, what do we have?
