Fashion has become a serious business for many people. Everyone seems to be interested in fashion in one way or another. What does it take to be fashionable? Some students took the time to talk about fashion as they watched their industrial training experience. A closer look at what they discussed indicated that many things are involved in fashion that could attract people’s interest. For Ms. Rebecca Nkonduok, Postgraduate Student, Department of Communication and General Studies, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, speaking about women and fashion, she described fashion as the way in which people define themselves and present themselves to the public in a decent and presentable manner.
She said that fashion was the way people introduce themselves to others without saying a word, adding that fashion can tell the whole world about people’s personality by the way they dress. “It’s a way of expressing yourself, it gives you a creative outlet and how you can constantly change and improve your fashion sense,” she said. Ms. Nkonduok emphasized that fashion does not necessarily mean buying expensive clothes or spending so much money on clothes and accessories, noting that the main purpose of fashion is to decorate oneself in a particular way that helps highlight one’s identity. saying, “We don’t need to buy expensive clothes or wear designers to look fashionable, but with what little we can afford to buy, let’s dress up and make our dressings clean and wear them with confidence to enhance the kind of personality we have for the world.”
She urged women to control and respect the balance of their way of dressing, and emphasized that the strength of a woman lies in the confidence that emanates when dressing. Ms. Olawumi Okanlawon from the Department of Mass Communication, Redentor University, Ede, Osun State, spoke about beauty and maintaining healthy skin. “(Your skin) is like your personal representation and that’s why people are so intentional about how they take care of their skin,” she said. The student identified the different skin types to include dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, and normal skin, noting that many people had not been able to identify her skin type. She also reported that there are different ways to maintain the skin, adding that the first thing to do is to identify the type of skin, saying that this would help identify the type of products to use.
Ms Okanlawon urged people to desist from staying in the sun for too long, stressing that excessive sun exposure causes wrinkles, age spots and skin redness. According to her, “people should treat their skin gently, avoid using hard sponges and should not wash their faces with detergent.” For Miss Oluwadara Adelakun from the Department of Mass Communication, McPherson University, Ajebo, Ogun State, many women don’t know how to take care of her hair. She said there are different types of hair, including straight, curly and natural hair, adding that wigs also come in human hair and synthetic forms. Explaining that both human hair and synthetic hair should be washed with warm water and shampoo, Miss Adelakun said that ladies should let their hair dry and then apply oil to make it shine before putting it on.
“We don’t wash it often, you should wash it with warm water and shampoo, and let it dry, but synthetic hair doesn’t usually last like human hair,” he said. Miss Adelakun urged the ladies to always eat foods that help them grow hair, adding that protein and fruit should be eaten in the right proportions. Miss Adelakun added that the egg also helps replenish hair by making it grow properly, and she said that berries, oily fish, sweet potatoes and avocado seeds are good for natural hair. She advised women to always massage their scalps, adding that they should always instruct their hairdressers to put on gloves before applying relaxers and massaging their scalps for health reasons. She also urged women with dry hair to find a good relaxer kit for their hair, saying that if you don’t take care of your hair, you could start to get dandruff.
“Take care of your synthetic, human, natural hair and eat the right food to help your hair grow,” she further stated. So what are the conclusions of the points raised by the commentators? Fashion is the way people define themselves and present themselves to the public in a decent and presentable way; fashion does not necessarily mean buying expensive clothes, or spending so much money on clothes and accessories; helps to highlight one’s own identity; the strength of a woman lies in the confidence that she transmits when dressing; people should desist from staying too long in the sun to avoid wrinkles, age spots and skin redness; and it is good to always eat foods that help them grow their hair, among others, which means that fashion is really a big deal.
