PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence College women’s soccer team will kick off the BIG EAST game at Seton Hall at 6:00 pm on Thursday, September 22 in South Orange, New Jersey.
EXPLORING THE FRIARERS… Providence enters Thursday’s game with an overall record of 2-5-1. The Friars fell to crosstown rival Brown University, 3-0, on Thursday, September 15, in Providence, Rhode Island.
Providence has had six different athletes score in its first eight games. Junior meg hughes (Rochester, Mass.) leads the Friars’ offense with five points on two goals and one assist. In addition to Hughes, senior alexis rothman (Norwell, Massachusetts), junior Ava Brandt (Chester, New Jersey), sophomore gillian kenney (Hanover, Mass.), graduate student hannah rose (Manchester, Vt.) and senior Angie Suaza (Nashua, NH) have also scored for the Friars. graduate student Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) leads the Friars in assists this season with three.
FRIARS IN 2021… The Friars finished with an overall record of 10-7-3 and a 5-3-2 mark at BIG EAST. Providence finished fifth in the conference and earned an overall NCAA Tournament bid for the first time since 1993. The Friars fell to Hofstra, 3-0, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars earned five All-BIG EAST selections in 2021. Junior meg hughes (Rochester, Mass.) earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors as a junior avery-snead (Wrentham, Mass.) and senior alexis rothman (Norwell, Mass.) earned second-team All-BIG EAST honors. sophomores gillian kenney (Hanover, Mass.) and Mary Paveglio (Lake Orion, Michigan) were selected for the BIG EAST Freshman Team.
THE FRAILEROS SELECTED FOURTH IN THE BIG EAST PRE-SEASON POLL… The BIG EAST conference announced its women’s soccer preseason coaching poll on Thursday, August 11. The Friars were picked to finish fourth at BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Xavier and Butler.
Hughes was the only Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the preseason All-BIG EAST team. Last season, Hughes started all 20 games for the Friars. He led Providence in points (22), goals (nine), and was tied for second on the team in assists (four). At the end of the season, he earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team.
HISTORY OF THE SERIES AGAINST SETON HALL… The Friars have an 11-9-0 lead over the Pirates. Providence has won eight of its last 10 meetings against Seton Hall. Last season, the Friars came out on top with a 2-0 victory over the Pirates in Providence, Rhode Island.
EXPLORING PIRATES… Seton Hall enters Thursday’s game with an overall record of 4-2-2. The Pirates wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 3-0 victory over Columbia on September 15.
The Pirates have outscored opponents 8-3 in 2022. Midfielder Natalie Tavana leads Seton Hall’s offense this season with seven points on two goals and three assists. Defender Abbie Roberts and forward Emma Sheehan also contributed two goals apiece for the Pirates. Goalkeeper Grace Gordon has started six games this season and has only allowed her opponents to score two goals against her. She has registered an average of 0.31 goals, a save percentage of 0.933 and four shutouts.
UNTIL NEXT TIME… The Friars host Butler in their first home game at BIG EAST on Thursday, September 29 at Chapey Field in Anderson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm on FS1.
