PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence College women’s soccer team will host Rutgers University No. 3 on Thursday, August 25 at 6:00 p.m. Sunday August 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm et. Providence began the season with an overall record of 1-1 with a win over Colgate in their home opener on August 18.

FRIARS VS. COLGATE… Providence shut out Colgate University, 1-0, in their home opener on Thursday, August 18 in Providence, RI Senior Ava Brandt (Chester, NJ) scored the game-winning goal for the Friars off a cross from a grad student Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) in the first half. Goalie emma bodmer (Monroe Township, Mass.) earned his first shutout of the season.

FRIARS VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY… The Friars fell to Boston University, 2-1, on Sunday, August 21, in Boston, Massachusetts. Junior meg hughes (Rochester, Mass.) scored the Friars’ only goal off a pass up the middle from Grillakis.

FRIARS IN 2021… The Friars finished with an overall record of 10-7-3 and a 5-3-2 mark at BIG EAST. Providence finished fifth in the conference and earned an overall NCAA Tournament bid for the first time since 1993. The Friars fell to Hofstra, 3-0, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Friars earned five All-BIG EAST selections in 2021. Junior meg hughes (Rochester, Mass.) earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors as a junior avery-snead (Wrentham, Mass.) and senior alexis rothman (Norwell, Mass.) earned second-team All-BIG EAST honors. sophomores gillian kenney (Hanover, Mass.) and Mary Paveglio (Lake Orion, Michigan) were selected for the BIG EAST Freshman Team.

THE FRAILEROS SELECTED FOURTH IN THE BIG EAST PRE-SEASON POLL… The BIG EAST conference announced its women’s soccer preseason coaching poll on Thursday, August 11. The Friars were picked to finish fourth at BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Xavier and Butler.

Hughes was the only Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the preseason All-BIG EAST team. Last season, Hughes started all 20 games for the Friars. He led Providence in points (22), goals (nine), and was tied for second on the team in assists (four). At the end of the season, he earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team.

NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season, including two graduate transfers and seven freshmen. Graduate transfers are hannah rose (Manchester, Vermont) and maddie coyne (Ewing, NJ). Pinkus played four years as a midfielder at Colgate University and Coyne played baseline at George Washington University for four seasons.

The incoming freshman class includes colleen casey (Franklin, Massachusetts), Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), finn abbey (Dedham, Mass.), alanna coffee (Warwick, RI), Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada), Ahna Faust (Grafton, Wisconsin) and Ava Beckett (Ajax, Canada).

FRIARS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS… The Friars are 1-4-3 all-time against ranked opponents. Providence earned its first victory over a ranked opponent on October 17, 2017, when it defeated No. 15 Georgetown, 1-0, in Providence, Rhode Island.

FAMILY MATTER… friar porter emma bodmer she will play her sister, Olivia Bodmer, who is a first-year goalie at Rutgers. Before joining the Scarlet Knights, Olivia played college soccer for four years at Notre Dame High School and was named to the All-American Game watch list.

HISTORY OF THE SERIES AGAINST #3 RUTGERS… The Friars have a 2-16-1 record against the Scarlet Knights. Last season, the Friars fell to Rutgers, 5-1, in Piscataway, NJ

EXPLORING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS… No. 3 Rutgers enters Thursday’s game with a 2-0 overall record to start the season with wins over New Mexico and UNLV.

In 2021, the Scarlet Knights went 19-4-2 overall and reached the Semifinal Round of the 2021 Women’s College Soccer Cup. Additionally, Rutgers won the 2021 Big Ten Conference Championship and was voted first in the poll of preseason Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights return with nine starters, including goalkeeper Megan McCelland, second-year forward Riley Tiernan and junior midfielder Sara Brocious, who were named the top ten players to watch from the preseason.

HISTORY OF THE SERIES AGAINST VANDERBILT… This will be the first time the Friars and the Commodore have met in the show’s history.

EXPLORING THE COMMODORES…Vanderbilt began their 2022 season 2-0 overall with wins over Evansville and Purdue.

The Commodores finished their 2021 campaign with an overall record of 8-8-3. In the SEC preseason poll, Vanderbilt was picked to finish sixth. The Commodores return 19 players to their roster this season. 2021 leading scorer Reagan Kelley returns to Vanderbilt for a fifth year in 2022 after posting 19 points on eight goals and three assists last season.
