The collection will mark the arrival of his streetwear brand Archives.
Great things happen in life when you make the impossible possible. In Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland, a girl made a list of at least six impossible things before breakfast. And before she finished her day, she witnessed things that are truly out of this world. Ellis Co, a 21-year-old budding fashion designer, is also listing impossible things on his sketchpad. First it’s establishing a brand, then putting on a big show to launch it and bring the future into the present, all in just a span of seven months. The wonderland of him has yet to be determined. But from the looks of his early designs, it’s not far off.
For his next collection called “Memories of the Future”, Ellis invites everyone to “remember the future” as he tries to merge the past with what is to come through his designs. Ella’s launch, taking place on July 27 at Whitespace Manila in Makati City, will mark the arrival of her Archives streetwear brand.
“I chose the Archives brand because the clothes I design are timeless, enduring pieces, and themselves a collection of historical records,” says Ellis. “I perceive these pieces as remnants of me as a designer for years to come, and years after I’m gone.”
Leading the brand as its founder and chief designer, Ellis looked to brutalist architecture as the guiding inspiration for his next collection. He married its elegant and geometric beauty with the aesthetics of contemporary Japanese fashion. Thus creating pieces that explore modern silhouettes and unique proportions.
“When I design, I focus a lot on the silhouette, how the shape looks, how the piece falls on the body,” says the designer. “Basically, I’m trying to do something that hasn’t been done yet but is still familiar to me. I try to find the familiar in the unknown.”
Before becoming an aspiring fashion designer, Ellis first demonstrated his creative abilities through music as a rapper, lyricist, and producer. He did it while he was the assistant vice president of operations for his family’s real estate and construction company. During his foray into music, he worked with Reika Mayani, a music video creator who has worked with local music artists like James Reid, Ace Banzuelo and Porque, to name a few. Now, Reika serves as the creative director of the Archives.
The “Memoirs of the Future” show will be directed by Frank Mamaril and is supposed to go beyond a simple catwalk presentation. Described as a multi-sensory event, the launch will include a graphic projection of designer inspiration, a molecular dining experience and a scent station, leading up to the fashion show with original music produced by Ellis playing in the background. Think of it as a style trip that’s all about déjà vu, because that’s what he intends the show to be.
